Aparima River Fishing Rules and Licence

Aparima River fishing guide for Fish & Game Southland rules, Thornbury Bridge season split, lower river to sea, access, flows, salmon notes, MPI boundary, and buying.

Angler fly fishing in a New Zealand river

Aparima River is a Southland named-water check built around Thornbury Bridge. The current Fish & Game table does not treat the whole river as one all-year answer: upstream of Thornbury Bridge has a seasonal row, while Thornbury Bridge to the sea is listed all year.

That makes this page narrower than the Southland overview and different from Mataura River bridge splits. Aparima planning starts with Fish & Game Southland, then the exact section, then access, river condition, tributary, and lower-river boundary checks.

Licence Authority

Freshwater sports fishing on Aparima River sits under Fish & Game Southland. Use the correct Fish & Game licence category, then read the current Southland regulations for the exact Aparima section.

The licence does not grant land access, override seasonal rows, or settle a coastal branch. Fish & Game's named Aparima page is useful for river context, while DOC and Environment Southland sources help with upper access and current conditions. MPI is the separate check when the trip becomes marine fishing or shellfish gathering.

Start With Thornbury Bridge

Thornbury Bridge is the first practical question because it changes the open-season answer. Fish & Game's Aparima context also describes the river from upper country through middle, lower, and tidal sections, so a casual place name is not precise enough for the rule row.

Trip phraseFirst official check
Aparima upstream of Thornbury BridgeSeasonal Southland row, access, tributaries, and current river conditions
Thornbury Bridge to the seaAll-year Southland row, lower-river access, and boundary if the plan turns marine
Hamilton Burn or Otautau StreamExact tributary row check before copying the main Aparima answer
Upper track or Takitimu routeDOC access context plus Fish & Game rules; a track is not a fishing licence
Jacobs River Estuary or coastKeep Fish & Game sports-fish rules separate from MPI marine rules where needed

Current Aparima River Rule Rows

As checked against the 2025/26 Southland regulations on 5 August 2026, the Aparima rows are:

Official Aparima sectionSeasonMethodsDaily bag shownSizeNotes
Upstream of Thornbury Bridge1 Oct-30 AprFSB2 troutNo Southland min/max sports-fish lengthsNotes 1, 2, 4
Thornbury Bridge to the seaAll yearFSB2 troutNo Southland min/max sports-fish lengthsNotes 1, 2, 4

FSB means artificial fly, spinner, and bait. Neither Aparima row checked for this page prints Note 8, so do not add a Designated Waters licence unless the trip moves to a current named designated water such as Upper Oreti.

What Notes 1, 2, And 4 Change

The Aparima row's daily bag is not the whole Southland answer. The notes decide several common traps:

Southland notePractical effect for Aparima planning
Note 1Coarse fishing is prohibited; perch have no daily limit; salmon are capped at 1 per day; total sports fish are capped at 4 per day; no min/max lengths apply
Note 2Salmon may not be taken or attempted from any river during April and May
Note 4Molluscs or parts of molluscs may be used in bait-fishing waters

The lower Aparima row is all year, but Note 2 still matters for any salmon idea in April or May. Do not turn "all year" into "all species and all methods without the notes."

Access, Conditions, And Upper River

Fish & Game's Aparima source describes good access along the river, but a fishing licence still does not create permission across private land or make every route suitable. For the upper river and Takitimu Conservation Area, DOC access sources should be treated as track and route context beside the Fish & Game rule row.

Planning questionOfficial source to open first
Is the upper access realistic?DOC Takitimu Conservation Area and Aparima River Track sources
Is the river rising or coloured?Fish & Game Southland flow entry point and Environment Southland current data
Is the plan on a tributary?Current Southland regulations by exact water name
Is the bank public?Fish & Game access context, local signs, and landowner permission where required
Is gear moving from another river?Check, clean, and dry before changing waterways

Current-condition sources should not be copied into fixed numbers in the article. Use them before travel, then match the legal row to the actual section being fished.

Lower River, Estuary, And Buying

Fish & Game's lower Aparima context reaches toward Jacobs River Estuary near Riverton, but authority still follows the water, activity, and species. The Aparima regulation row controls freshwater sports fishing. MPI rules apply to separate marine fish, shellfish, or sea-fishing activity.

Before Fishing Aparima River

  1. Confirm the trip is Aparima River main stem, a tributary, upper track access, estuary, or coast.
  2. Place the main-stem session upstream of Thornbury Bridge or from Thornbury Bridge to the sea.
  3. Open the current Southland regulations and match season, FSB methods, daily bag, and Notes 1, 2, and 4.
  4. Recheck tributaries by exact name instead of copying the main Aparima row.
  5. Confirm access, river condition, weather, road and track status, and clean-gear steps.
  6. Buy the Fish & Game product only after the section, date, angler category, and any marine or special-water side trip are clear.

Aparima River is ready when the Thornbury Bridge season split, Southland notes, tributary status, access, current conditions, and buying path all line up.

FAQ

Do I need a Fish & Game licence for Aparima River?

Yes. Aparima River is a Fish & Game Southland freshwater sports-fishing water, so carry the correct Fish & Game licence and check the current Southland regulations.

Is all Aparima River open all year?

No. The current Southland row is seasonal upstream of Thornbury Bridge, while Thornbury Bridge to the sea is listed all year.

What authority applies near the estuary or coast?

Fish & Game controls freshwater sports fishing in the Aparima row. If the plan becomes marine fish, shellfish, or separate coastal fishing, add MPI recreational fishing rules.

What is the Aparima rule trap?

The trap is copying the lower all-year row upstream. Thornbury Bridge is the season boundary, and tributaries such as Hamilton Burn need their own exact-row checks.
