Haast River fishing guide for West Coast Fish & Game rules, the Pleasant Flat Bridge split, lower-river winter checks, river-mouth authority, and licence buying.

Haast River is the south-end West Coast named-water check for one boundary: Pleasant Flat Bridge. The current Fish & Game table makes the upstream river seasonal and the downstream river all year for trout and perch. That is the L3 decision to settle before buying.

This is not a broad wilderness profile and not a Designated Waters page. Start with West Coast Fish & Game, then Haast River, then Pleasant Flat Bridge, then access, weather, coast split, and licence category.

Haast River Decision Path

Haast River belongs to the West Coast Fish & Game freshwater rule path. It is not DOC Taupo water, not a controlled fishery, and not currently listed as a West Coast Designated Water.

Fish & Game describes the West Coast region as extending to Awarua Point south of Haast. That regional context helps with location, but the rule decision still turns on the exact Haast River row.

Current Haast River Rule Rows

As checked against the 2025/26 West Coast regulations, the Haast trout and perch rows are:

Haast River sectionSeasonMethodsDaily bag shownNotes
Upstream of Pleasant Flat Bridge1 Oct-30 AprFSB2 brown trout; 2 rainbow trout; perch no limitNote 1
Downstream of Pleasant Flat BridgeAll yearFSB2 brown trout; 2 rainbow trout; perch no limitNote 1
Salmon layer for waters not otherwise specified1 Oct-30 AprFSB1 salmonNote 1

FSB means artificial fly, spinner, and bait. Note 1 says there is no minimum length for trout and salmon in West Coast waters except for salmon in named lake exceptions; Haast River is not one of those named lake exceptions.

Pleasant Flat Bridge Boundary

Pleasant Flat Bridge is the named boundary that decides whether the current Haast trout/perch row is seasonal or all year. DOC's Pleasant Flat Campsite page provides access context beside SH6 east of Haast and mentions nearby Haast River fishing, but DOC does not decide Fish & Game rules.

Trip phrasePractical reading
Upstream of Pleasant Flat BridgeUse the seasonal 1 Oct-30 Apr row before choosing dates
Downstream of Pleasant Flat BridgeUse the all-year trout/perch row, then check access, weather, and river
Pleasant Flat access planTreat DOC information as route/access context, not fishing-rule authority
Nearby South Westland riverCheck the exact river row; do not copy Haast to Arawhata, Okuru, or Turnbull
Salmon-retention planReopen the salmon row; lower Haast all-year trout/perch is not all-year salmon

The all-year lower row is useful, especially for winter planning, but it is not permission to move upstream or across to neighbouring rivers without a new row check.

Lower River, Coast, And South Westland Split

Haast trips can blend river, highway access, coast, and South Westland river-mouth planning. Keep those decisions separate.

QuestionCheck before fishing
Is the plan at the river mouth?Confirm exact position and species before switching between Fish & Game and MPI
Is the plan a separate sea day?Use MPI recreational marine rules for marine fish, shellfish, and coast rules
Is the plan above the bridge?Use the seasonal Haast row and confirm dates
Is the plan below the bridge?Use the all-year trout/perch row, plus access and condition checks
Is gear moving between catchments?Clean and dry waders, boots, nets, and tackle before changing water

Do not assume the word "Haast" makes every nearby water share one season. Arawhata, Okuru, Turnbull, Waiatoto, and other South Westland rows have their own named boundaries.

Buying The Right Licence

Buy after the bridge side and wider itinerary are clear.

Angler planBuying path
Haast upstream of Pleasant Flat BridgeConfirm 1 Oct-30 Apr dates, then buy the correct Fish & Game licence
Haast downstream of Pleasant Flat BridgeConfirm all-year trout/perch row, then buy the correct Fish & Game licence
Overseas visitorCheck non-resident Fish & Game products before choosing duration
Haast plus Karamea or MokihinuiAdd the West Coast Designated Waters check for those separate waters
Haast plus coast or shellfishFish & Game for freshwater sports fish; MPI for the separate marine activity

Haast River is not a special-licence shortcut. It is a normal West Coast Fish & Game licence decision once the Pleasant Flat Bridge boundary is known.

Before Fishing Haast River

  1. Confirm the session is Haast River, not a nearby South Westland river or the coast.
  2. Place the fishing water upstream or downstream of Pleasant Flat Bridge.
  3. Open the current West Coast regulations and match season, FSB methods, daily bag, Note 1, and salmon caveat.
  4. Check whether the plan is freshwater sports fishing, separate marine activity, or both.
  5. Review DOC Pleasant Flat access context, day-of-weather, road, river, and safety conditions.
  6. Choose the resident or non-resident Fish & Game licence only after the bridge side and dates are clear.
  7. Carry the licence and current official links, then clean gear before moving to another water.

Haast River is ready when the Pleasant Flat Bridge side, lower-river or upper-river season, coast authority, access, weather, and licence category all agree.

FAQ

Do I need a Fish & Game licence for Haast River?

Yes. Haast River is a West Coast Fish & Game freshwater sports-fishing check, so use the correct Fish & Game licence and current West Coast notice before fishing.

Is the whole Haast River open all year?

No. The current trout/perch table splits the river at Pleasant Flat Bridge: upstream is seasonal, while downstream is all year.

Is Haast River a West Coast Designated Water?

No current West Coast Designated Waters source checked for this page lists Haast River. Karamea and Mokihinui are the West Coast designated-water examples to recheck.

What is the Haast River trap?

Do not carry the lower all-year row upstream of Pleasant Flat Bridge, and do not treat river-mouth or coast activity as the same authority question.
