Lake Benmore in the Central South Island high country

Lake Benmore/Te Ao Mārama is a Central South Island Fish & Game lake page for anglers who need the lake row before buying. The current rule table gives the lake an all-year FSB row, but its tributary wording excludes Tekapo/Takapō, Ahuriri, and Otematapaio rivers from the generic tributary row.

That makes this page different from Tekapo River/Takapō and Waitaki River. Benmore's L3 issue is the lake row, tributary exclusions, and hydro lake-level check. Tekapo River uses a lower-powerlines split, and Waitaki River uses the Stonewall powerlines and sea-run salmon Note 10.

Lake Benmore Decision Path

Start by deciding whether the session is on the lake itself or on a tributary.

Planning layerLake Benmore decision
L1 authorityCentral South Island Fish & Game
L2 waterLake Benmore/Te Ao Mārama and its tributaries
L3 actionCheck all-year lake row, tributary exclusions, Note 1, lake levels, access, buying

Do not treat every nearby water as Lake Benmore. Tekapo River, Ahuriri River, Otematapaio River, canals, and Waitaki River can lead to separate rule rows.

Current Lake Benmore Rule Rows

As checked against the 2025/26 Central South Island regulations, the lake and tributary rows are different.

Lake Benmore water or sectionSeasonMethodsDaily bag shownNotes
Lake Benmore/Te Ao MāramaAll yearFSB4 sports fishNote 1
Lake Benmore tributaries except Tekapo/Takapō, Ahuriri, and Otematapaio rivers1st Saturday Nov-30 AprFSB4 trout; 2 salmonNote 1

FSB means artificial fly, spinner, and bait. The lake row's 4 sports fish wording should be read as a combined lake limit, not as 4 trout plus 4 salmon.

Tributary Exclusions

The excluded tributaries are the L3 trap. A lake plan that turns into one of those rivers needs the separate river row before fishing.

Boundary questionPlanning action
Fishing Lake Benmore itselfCheck all-year FSB lake row, 4 sports fish, Note 1, lake levels, and access
Generic Benmore tributaryCheck first-Saturday November season, FSB, 4 trout, 2 salmon, and Note 1
Tekapo River/TakapōOpen the Tekapo River page for the lower-powerlines split
Ahuriri RiverOpen the Ahuriri River page for Longslip Creek, lagoons, and sockeye timing
Otematapaio RiverReopen the exact CSI regulations before assuming the generic tributary row applies

Do not borrow canal rules for the lake. Fish & Game's hydro-canal guidance is useful nearby context, but canal SH8 Bridge and Note 8 questions do not decide the Lake Benmore row.

Lake Bag, Size, And Hydro Conditions

Note 1 applies to Lake Benmore. It includes the First Schedule conditions, no trout minimum length, and a different salmon minimum for lakes than for rivers.

IssueLake Benmore planning meaning
Trout sizeNo trout minimum length in the region unless another row says otherwise
Salmon sizeSalmon killed in lakes have a 250 mm minimum under Note 1
Lake daily bag4 sports fish total for Lake Benmore
Hydro condition checkReview Meridian lake-level and river-flow information before relying on access
Moving into Waitaki or canalsReopen those pages because their boundaries and notes differ

Lake levels and working-water surroundings can affect ramps, shoreline access, boating decisions, and backup plans. They do not change the legal row unless an official rule source says so.

Buying Actions

Buy after the exact lake or tributary row, access, lake level, and angler category are settled.

Before Fishing Lake Benmore/Te Ao Mārama

  1. Confirm the session is Central South Island Fish & Game freshwater.
  2. Decide whether the fishing water is Lake Benmore itself or a tributary.
  3. Open the current Central South Island regulations and match season, methods, daily bag, and Note 1.
  4. Check whether the tributary is excluded from the generic Benmore tributary row.
  5. Confirm access, weather, lake levels, working-water context, local signs, and clean-gear steps.
  6. Buy the correct Fish & Game product for the angler category and dates.
  7. Recheck if the itinerary moves into Tekapo River, Ahuriri River, canals, Waitaki River, another region, or saltwater.

Lake Benmore/Te Ao Mārama is ready for purchase only when the lake row, tributary exclusions, Note 1, and hydro-condition check have all been handled. The lake name alone is not a complete rule answer.
