Waiohine River Fishing Rules and Licence

Waiohine River fishing guide for Wellington Fish & Game rules, the State Highway 2 and tributary split, lower all-year FSB row, Waiohine Gorge access, flow checks, and buying.

Angler fishing in a New Zealand river

The Waiohine River needs two maps in the reader's head: the legal map in the Wellington notice and the practical access map in Fish & Game's access guide. State Highway 2 decides the rule row; “upper”, “middle”, and “lower” describe trip context and should not be used to invent a different season or method.

This page is narrower than the Wellington region guide and different from Ruamāhanga River. Waiohine's named row explicitly includes tributaries upstream of SH2, while its gorge access brings a separate flow and private-land check.

Waiohine River Rule Path

Identify the exact reach and whether a tributary is part of the plan.

Planning layerWaiohine decision
L1 authorityWellington Fish & Game
L2 waterWaiohine River and its named upstream tributaries
L3 actionCheck SH2, tributary status, season, method, bag, access, flow, and buying

The current notice does not identify Waiohine as a Designated Water. Do not carry Upper Rangitīkei's extra licence layer into this river.

Current Waiohine River Rules

As checked against the Wellington 2025/26 sports fishing regulations, the named water has two rows.

Waiohine sectionSeasonMethodsDaily bag shownSizeNotes
Upstream of State Highway 2, including tributaries1 Oct-30 AprFS1No Waiohine-specific size note shownTributaries stay in this upstream row
Downstream of State Highway 2All yearFSB2No Waiohine-specific size note shownLower row is the current winter option

FS means artificial fly and spinner. FSB adds bait. The absence of a Waiohine-specific size note should not be rewritten as a permanent “no size limit” promise.

The current source set was checked on 5 August 2026. Reopen the next Wellington notice before relying on these dates after 30 September 2026.

State Highway 2 And Tributaries

The legal boundary is more precise than a broad “upper river” label.

Planned waterRule action
Main stem upstream of SH2Check 1 Oct-30 Apr, FS, and one fish
Tributary upstream of SH2Keep it in the upstream seasonal row unless the current notice changes
Main stem downstream of SH2Check all-year, FSB, and two fish
Waiohine Gorge road-end planUse the exact access and flow checks, then match the legal row
Waiohine plus RuamāhangaReopen both named-water rows; the confluence does not merge their rules

Do not use an access road, gorge sign, or local nickname as a substitute for the State Highway 2 language in the current official table.

Rule Boundary Versus Access Reaches

Fish & Game's access material describes practical approaches around Waiohine Gorge Road, Waiohine Valley Road, Greytown, the Waiohine Bridge, and Tilsons Road. These are access references, not new legal rule sections.

Access contextWhat it changes
Waiohine Gorge Road and road endBackcountry road, gorge wading, and current condition checks
Upper or middle access languagePlanning context only; reopen SH2 and tributary wording
Lower river near the Ruamāhanga confluenceConfirm the downstream row and actual legal access
Private riverbed or farm edgeSeek permission and remain within the permitted route
Gate, ford, or track conditionFollow current signs and access guidance before parking or crossing

The Fish & Game access PDF warns that some riverbed is privately owned and that its map is guidance rather than a permanent access guarantee.

Access, Flow, And Gorge Conditions

The Waiohine access guide warns that gorge wading should be undertaken with extreme care and only at low flows. Greater Wellington's Waiohine Gorge dashboard is useful for a live condition check; it is not an angling-safety certification or a fixed threshold.

DOC's Tararua Forest Park page adds road-end and backcountry context. A legal fishing row does not make a gravel road, ford, bridge, track, or river crossing safe on the day.

Practical questionSafer action
Is the gorge flow rising?Check the live dashboard, weather, daylight, and a backup plan
Is a ford or road-end route involved?Reopen DOC access context and local signs before travel
Is wading planned?Keep the low-flow caution, footwear, exit route, and partner plan together
Is the bank private?Get permission; a Fish & Game licence does not grant access
Has gear moved between waters?Follow MPI Check Clean Dry guidance

Never convert a live flow reading into a universal “safe to wade” number.

Licence And Buying Actions

Buy after the named water and access route are clear.

Angler planBuying path
Resident lower Waiohine tripConfirm downstream FSB row, access, and current conditions, then buy Fish & Game
Resident upper or tributary tripConfirm 1 Oct-30 Apr FS row before choosing dates and buying
Non-resident visitorCheck non-resident status and duration before purchasing
Waiohine Gorge plus Tararua backcountryFish & Game for the fishing row, DOC for park access, and live conditions for the route
Waiohine plus RuamāhangaMatch both named rows rather than carrying one licence explanation across both waters

The licence receipt does not replace the SH2 boundary, private-land permission, flow, or road-end check.

Before Fishing The Waiohine

  1. Confirm the session is Wellington Fish & Game freshwater fishing.
  2. Place the water upstream or downstream of State Highway 2.
  3. Keep upstream tributaries in the seasonal upstream row.
  4. Read the current Wellington regulations for season, method, bag, and notes.
  5. Check the official access guide, live gorge flow, DOC road-end context, private land, weather, daylight, and river crossings.
  6. Reopen the named-water row if the itinerary adds Ruamāhanga, Wairarapa Moana, or another Wellington river.
  7. Buy the correct Fish & Game product after the reach, date, and angler category are settled.

The Waiohine plan is ready when the legal SH2 row, tributary status, actual access route, live condition signal, and licence category agree.

FAQ

Do I need a Fish & Game licence for the Waiohine River?

Yes. Freshwater sports fishing on the Waiohine River is in the Wellington Fish & Game rule path, subject to the current named-water row and licence category.

Is the Waiohine River open all year?

Only the row downstream of State Highway 2 is all year. The row upstream of State Highway 2, including tributaries, runs from 1 October to 30 April in the current notice.

What authority applies in Waiohine Gorge?

Fish & Game Wellington controls the freshwater sports-fishing row. DOC Tararua Forest Park and Greater Wellington sources add access and condition context; they do not replace the Fish & Game licence or regulation.

What is the Waiohine rule trap?

The legal row uses State Highway 2 and explicitly puts tributaries in the upstream seasonal row. Upper, middle, and lower access language is trip context, not a substitute boundary.
