Angler fly fishing in a New Zealand river

Ahuriri River is a Central South Island Fish & Game river page for anglers who need the Longslip Creek split before buying. The current regulations do not treat the whole river, its tributaries, and the Ahuriri Lagoons as one shared FSB water.

That makes this page different from Tekapo River/Takapō and Lake Benmore/Te Ao Mārama. Ahuriri turns on Longslip Creek, lagoon methods, high-country access, current flow, and the Note 1 sockeye timing that names Ahuriri River.

Ahuriri River Decision Path

Start by placing the session upstream or downstream of Longslip Creek, then decide whether it is in the lagoons.

Planning layerAhuriri decision
L1 authorityCentral South Island Fish & Game
L2 waterAhuriri River, tributaries, and Ahuriri River Lagoons
L3 actionCheck Longslip Creek, lagoon fly-only row, Note 1 sockeye timing, flow, access, buying

Do not treat the Ahuriri as a canal, a Lake Benmore tributary shortcut, or a sea-run salmon card page. The current Ahuriri rows refer to Note 1, not Note 10.

Current Ahuriri Rule Rows

As checked against the 2025/26 Central South Island regulations, the Ahuriri rows run from the first Saturday in November to 30 April. On 5 August 2026, that 2025/26 Ahuriri open window has ended, so a current-date trip needs the next current Fish & Game source before assuming the river is open.

Ahuriri water or sectionSeasonMethodsDaily bag shownNotes
Ahuriri River and tributaries upstream of and including Longslip Creek1st Saturday Nov-30 AprFS2 trout; 2 salmonNote 1
Ahuriri River and tributaries downstream of Longslip Creek except Omarama Stream1st Saturday Nov-30 AprFS4 trout; 2 salmonNote 1
Ahuriri River Lagoons1st Saturday Nov-30 AprF2 troutNote 1

FS means artificial fly and spinner. F means artificial fly only. Because the lagoons row does not show a salmon number, keep the zero-bag default in mind instead of importing the river salmon column.

Longslip Creek And Lagoons

Longslip Creek is the main L3 boundary. It changes the trout daily bag between upper and lower Ahuriri water, while the lagoons row changes the method to fly only.

Boundary questionPlanning action
Upstream of and including Longslip CreekCheck FS methods, 2 trout, 2 salmon, and Note 1
Downstream of Longslip CreekCheck FS methods, 4 trout, 2 salmon, and Note 1
Omarama StreamDo not assume the lower Ahuriri row; reopen the exact CSI table
Ahuriri River LagoonsCheck the fly-only row and trout-only number shown
Moving into Lake Benmore or Tekapo RiverOpen those named-water rows because their seasons and boundaries differ

The Ministry for the Environment's Ahuriri water conservation order is useful context for why this river is treated carefully. It does not replace the Fish & Game regulations, licence requirement, access permission, or current-condition check.

Sockeye Timing And Fish Size

Note 1 applies to the Ahuriri rows. It includes general First Schedule conditions, no trout minimum length, and salmon minimum-length wording. It also says anglers must not fish for sockeye salmon from 1 March to 30 April in named rivers and streams that include Ahuriri River.

Note 1 itemPlanning meaning
Trout sizeNo trout minimum length in the region unless another row says otherwise
Salmon sizeSalmon killed in river waters have a 300 mm minimum
Sockeye timingDo not fish for sockeye salmon from 1 March to 30 April in Ahuriri
Sea-run salmon Note 10Not shown for the Ahuriri rows; do not add that licence/card layer here

If the trip changes to Rangitata, Waitaki, Ashburton/Hakatere, or another sea-run salmon water, reopen that page and the current salmon sources before fishing for salmon.

Access, Flow, And High-Country Conditions

Fish & Game's Central South Island river material frames Ahuriri as a high-country river where access, 4WD practicality, private land, and weather matter. Environment Canterbury's Ahuriri River at SH8 flow page adds a current-condition check.

Practical questionSafer check
Is the route public and practical?Check Fish & Game access information, local signs, roads, and permission
Is the river fishable today?Check the Ahuriri River at SH8 flow page, weather, visibility, and backup water
Is the target sockeye salmon?Recheck Note 1 before fishing during March or April
Is gear moving from another water?Clean and dry gear before changing waterways
Is the plan outside freshwater?Split Fish & Game freshwater rules from MPI marine rules where needed

A correct licence does not create access, make a high-country river safe, or override local signs. Treat flow and weather as condition checks, not guarantees.

Buying Actions

Buy after the exact Ahuriri row, date, access, and angler category are settled.

Angler planBuying path
Resident upstream Ahuriri tripConfirm the current season is open, FS method, 2-trout row, then buy Fish & Game
Resident lower Ahuriri tripConfirm lower-row 4-trout limit, salmon column, access, and date, then buy Fish & Game
Ahuriri Lagoons tripConfirm fly-only row and trout number before buying
Non-resident visitorCheck non-resident Fish & Game options before choosing duration
Ahuriri plus Lake Benmore or TekapoCheck each named water separately before relying on one licence plan

Keep the licence, current CSI regulations, and access/condition sources available during the session. If the itinerary moves to another river, a hydro lake, a canal, another Fish & Game region, or saltwater, reopen the official source before fishing.

Before Fishing Ahuriri River

  1. Confirm the session is Central South Island Fish & Game freshwater.
  2. Place the fishing water upstream or downstream of Longslip Creek, or in Ahuriri River Lagoons.
  3. Open the current Central South Island regulations and match season, methods, daily bag, and Note 1.
  4. Check sockeye timing if March or April is part of the plan.
  5. Confirm access, permission, weather, Ahuriri River at SH8 flow, and clean-gear steps.
  6. Buy the correct Fish & Game product for the angler category and dates.
  7. Recheck if the itinerary moves to Lake Benmore, Tekapo River, a canal, another region, or saltwater.

Ahuriri River is ready for purchase only when the Longslip Creek split, lagoon rule, Note 1, and high-country condition checks have all been handled. The river name alone is not a complete licence answer.

FAQ

Do I need a Fish & Game licence for Ahuriri River?

Yes. Ahuriri River is Central South Island Fish & Game freshwater, subject to the current regional regulations and the exact reach being fished.

Is Ahuriri River a Taupo or MPI licence?

No. The freshwater sports-fishing authority is Fish & Game Central South Island. MPI marine rules apply only to separate coastal or saltwater fishing.

Does the Ahuriri water conservation order change the licence?

No. The water conservation order is special river context, not a separate sports-fishing licence. Use the Fish & Game rule row for fishing rules.

What is the Ahuriri River rule trap?

Do not flatten the river into one row. Longslip Creek changes the trout bag, Ahuriri Lagoons are fly-only, and Note 1 includes sockeye timing.
