Family, Child and Junior Fishing Licences in New Zealand

Family, child and junior fishing licence decisions in New Zealand are authority-specific. A child may need a free Fish & Game licence, a paid Taupo child licence, a separate Lake Rotoaira check, or no freshwater licence for sea fishing, depending on the water.

Children still need the right category

The safest rule for freshwater sports fishing is not "children are free". It is "children need the right category for the right authority".

Do not let "free" decide the purchase. Age date, residency, authority, family coverage, supervision, and named-water rules all matter.

Fish & Game child, junior and family licences

Fish & Game says every freshwater sports fisher needs a valid sports-fishing licence, including children. In the current Fish & Game resident examples used by this site, a child under 12 is free, a junior whole-season licence is NZ$31, and a resident family licence is NZ$203.

Fish & Game resident junior generally means age 12 to 17 on 1 October. Resident child means under 12. The child price can be zero, but the licence category still has to be selected correctly.

The Fish & Game family licence is a resident product. Fish & Game describes it as covering a couple plus up to four children or grandchildren under 18 on 1 October, and at least one child or grandchild needs to be named for the family product to make sense. Its conditions matter: Fish & Game's 2025/26 update says both adult licence holders can fish independently, while children or grandchildren on the family licence need to fish with either adult licence holder under the official terms.

Age dates are not interchangeable

The birthday date is part of the licence decision. Do not copy an age category from one authority into another.

Resident vs non-resident child and junior rules

Visitor families should not copy the resident table. Fish & Game non-resident junior and child products have their own prices and limits. Current examples include NZ$51 for a non-resident junior or child whole-season licence and NZ$23 for a non-resident junior or child one-day licence.

This matters for overseas families because the wrong category can be treated like fishing without the correct licence. A child being young does not make the family resident, and a free resident child category does not automatically apply to a visiting child.

DOC Taupo child and family licences

Taupo is managed by DOC, not Fish & Game. A Fish & Game family licence does not cover the Taupo Fishing District, and a Fish & Game child or junior category does not decide the Taupo product.

DOC Taupo uses its own child, family, and senior options. The current DOC store examples used by this site include resident family season at NZ$159, resident senior season at NZ$90, child season at NZ$13.50, adult week at NZ$49 for residents or NZ$89 for non-residents, adult 24-hour at NZ$23, and child 24-hour at NZ$5. DOC Taupo child category language is tied to age under 18 on 1 July, not Fish & Game's junior wording, and the senior category is tied to age 65 or over on 1 July.

Keep the family and senior products in the resident lane. For non-resident Taupo planning, use the visible adult season, week, and 24-hour products plus child season or child 24-hour products; do not invent a child week product if it is not visible in the DOC store.

Lake Rotoaira: separate child and whanau check

Lake Rotoaira sits near Taupo in ordinary travel planning, but DOC treats it separately from the Taupo Fishing District. It has its own licences and regulations, and its licence season normally runs from 1 September to 30 June, with July-August closed unless varied.

Public store examples used by this site include Lake Rotoaira whānau season at NZ$99, adult season at NZ$45, child season at NZ$12, adult week at NZ$22.50, child week at NZ$5, adult 24-hour at NZ$8, and child 24-hour at NZ$2. Rotoaira child category language is tied to age under 18 on 1 September. Those examples should be checked again in the DOC store before paying, because Rotoaira is not covered by ordinary Taupo assumptions.

Rotoaira also has trust and contact caveats. Public licence buying is not the same as owner or direct-descendant instructions, and DOC's Rotoaira guidance includes Mana Whenua/Kaitiaki contact paths where they apply.

If a family itinerary includes both Taupo and Rotoaira, treat them as two DOC checks rather than one family licence decision.

Saltwater fishing with children

Recreational sea fishing around New Zealand does not use a Fish & Game or DOC Taupo freshwater licence, including for children. MPI marine rules still apply.

For family sea fishing, the practical rule work is local area, species, size limits, daily limits, shellfish rules, closures, protected species, and gear. A beach or charter day should not trigger a trout licence purchase just because the search result says "fishing licence".

Free fishing licence NZ

"Free fishing licence NZ" is an unsafe shortcut. It can refer to a Fish & Game resident child category, a local event, a misunderstanding about sea fishing, or an outdated page.

Use "free" only after the authority and age category are clear.

For freshwater sports fishing, always ask which authority, which age category, which residency category, which date, and which water. A child can be free in one Fish & Game resident situation and still need a paid DOC Taupo or Lake Rotoaira product in another situation.
