Lake Wanaka in Otago, New Zealand

Lake Wanaka is an Otago Fish & Game lake check, not a shortcut for every Southern Lakes or Upper Clutha rule. The current Otago regulations list Lake Wanaka as all-year FSB water with trout and salmon limits, but they also close specific township wharf and marina shoreline areas.

That makes this page different from the Upper Clutha River/Mata-Au guide. Lake Wanaka answers the lake row, closed township zone, and boat-versus-shore note. Upper Clutha answers the outlet-to-river row and the Deans Bank fly-only section.

Lake Wanaka Decision Path

Start with the lake itself, then check whether the plan has moved into the river outlet, a tributary, or a closed township area.

Planning layerLake Wanaka decision
L1 authorityOtago Fish & Game
L2 waterLake Wanaka
L3 actionCheck all-year FSB row, closed wharf and marina zone, boat note, access, and buying path

Do not treat Lake Wanaka, Lake Hawea, Lake Wakatipu, Lake Dunstan, and the Upper Clutha/Mata-Au as one shared row. The Otago PDF separates named lake and river rules.

Current Lake Wanaka Rule Row

As checked against the 2025/26 Otago regulations, Lake Wanaka has an all-year row and named closed areas.

Lake Wanaka itemCurrent Otago row
Open seasonAll year, except named closed township wharf and marina shoreline areas
MethodsFSB: artificial fly, spinner, and bait
Daily bag2 trout; 4 salmon shown in the salmon column
SizeNo Lake Wanaka-specific minimum shown; check Otago Note 1 for regional exceptions
Extra notesNotes 1 and 2
Boat noteNote 2 allows boat, canoe, pontoon, or flotation-device fishing, with motor boats at least 100 m from shore anglers

The trout number should be read as 2 trout, not 2 brown plus 2 rainbow. Keep the current Otago PDF open for the legal row, especially around the 1 October season rollover.

Township Wharf And Marina Closure

The useful Lake Wanaka trap is not the base licence. It is the closed area near the Wanaka township launch wharf, public jetty at Wanaka Marina, and shoreline between them.

Closed-area wording in the current rowPlanning action
Within 150 m of the launch wharf at the township of WanakaDo not fish there
Within 150 m of any part of the public jetty at Wanaka MarinaDo not fish there
Anywhere within 150 m of the shoreline between the wharf and the jettyDo not treat the connecting shoreline as open
Lake session away from the closed zoneCheck the all-year FSB row, Note 2, access, weather, and boat plan

If local signs, ramp notices, or current official sources are stricter, follow the current official direction before fishing.

Boat, Shore, And Access Planning

Fish & Game's Lake Wanaka material gives named-lake context, while the regulation row gives the legal method, bag, notes, and closure. Keep practical boat and access decisions separate from the fishing licence.

Planning questionSafer check
Is the plan lake or river?Lake Wanaka row for the lake; Upper Clutha/Mata-Au row after the outlet
Is a boat part of the plan?Read Note 2 and keep motor boats away from shore anglers as required
Is the plan near town facilities?Check the 150 m wharf, marina jetty, and shoreline closure
Is public or private access involved?Confirm ramps, local signs, weather, lake wind, and permission where needed
Is gear moving to another water?Clean and dry gear before changing lakes, rivers, boats, or tackle storage

A Fish & Game licence does not make lake wind safe, open a closed shoreline, or grant private access. It only solves the angler's sports-fishing licence category when the water remains in Fish & Game freshwater.

When This Becomes Upper Clutha/Mata-Au

The Lake Wanaka row should stop when the plan becomes the Clutha River/Mata-Au outlet or a named river section. Deans Bank has its own fly-only seasonal row and should not be treated as lake fishing.

If the itinerary says...Better page and rule check
Lake Wanaka open lake waterStay with this Lake Wanaka row
Wanaka township wharf or Wanaka Marina shorelineCheck the closed-zone wording first
Outlet to Albert Town or Deans BankUse Upper Clutha River/Mata-Au
Lake Wanaka plus Greenstone RiverUse the Greenstone controlled-fishery guide for that separate special water
Lake Wanaka plus coast or harbourUse MPI marine rules for the separate saltwater part

Do not treat a lake licence purchase as proof that every nearby river, tributary, or special water has the same method and season.

Buying Actions

Buy after the water list, closed area, access, and angler category are settled.

Buyer situationSafer path
Resident fishing Lake Wanaka onlyConfirm the lake row, closed areas, access, and date, then buy Fish & Game
Non-resident visitorCheck Fish & Game non-resident options before choosing duration
Lake Wanaka plus Upper CluthaCheck both pages before buying for the whole itinerary
Lake Wanaka plus designated waterOpen the relevant designated-water page before relying on a short licence
Lake Wanaka plus coastal fishingFish & Game for the lake, MPI marine rules for the separate coastal session

Keep the licence and current Otago regulations available during the session. If the plan changes from the lake to the outlet, a river, a designated water, or the coast, reopen the official source before fishing.

Before Fishing Lake Wanaka

  1. Confirm the session is Lake Wanaka freshwater sports fishing.
  2. Open the current Otago Fish & Game regulations and match the Lake Wanaka row.
  3. Confirm all-year FSB methods, trout and salmon limits, and Notes 1 and 2.
  4. Keep out of the named 150 m township wharf, marina jetty, and connecting shoreline closure.
  5. Check boat, shore, access, weather, lake wind, local signs, and clean-gear steps.
  6. Buy the correct Fish & Game product for the angler category and dates.
  7. Recheck if the itinerary moves into the Upper Clutha/Mata-Au, another Otago special water, or saltwater.

Lake Wanaka is ready for purchase only when the lake row, closed township zone, boat and shore plan, and buying category have been checked together. The lake name is not enough for nearby river or special-water trips.
