Arahura River is a rule-and-access decision, not a generic West Coast river profile. The current Fish & Game table splits the river at Milltown/Landsburgh Bridge, but Fish & Game also records that the bed and banks are not public land. A licence does not solve that access layer.
For Arahura, the order matters: West Coast Fish & Game, then Arahura River, then Milltown/Landsburgh Bridge, then current access permission, then licence purchase.
Arahura River Decision Path
Arahura River is in the West Coast Fish & Game freshwater region. It is not DOC Taupo water and it is not currently a West Coast Designated Water. Its distinct L3 issue is access permission before buying.
| Planning layer | Arahura River decision |
|---|---|
| L1 authority | West Coast Fish & Game |
| L2 water | Arahura River upstream or downstream of Milltown/Landsburgh Bridge |
| L3 action | Confirm access permission first, then match the row and licence category |
The West Coast regulation booklet says that, unlike most West Coast rivers, the bed and banks of Arahura River are not public land. It also says Mawhera Incorporation may operate a permit system at its discretion. A later Fish & Game West Coast annual report recorded that no Arahura access permits were being issued due to health and safety concerns.
Current Arahura Rule Rows
As checked against the 2025/26 West Coast regulations, the Arahura trout and perch rows are:
| Arahura water or section | Season | Methods | Daily bag shown | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upstream of Milltown/Landsburgh Bridge | 1 Oct-30 Apr | FSB | 2 brown trout; 2 rainbow trout; perch no limit | Note 1 |
| Downstream of Milltown/Landsburgh Bridge | All year | FSB | 2 brown trout; 2 rainbow trout; perch no limit | Note 1 |
| Salmon layer for waters not otherwise specified | 1 Oct-30 Apr | FSB | 1 salmon | Note 1 |
FSB means artificial fly, spinner, and bait. Note 1 says there is no minimum length for trout and salmon in West Coast waters except for salmon in named lake exceptions; Arahura River is not one of those named lake exceptions.
Access Permission Before Buying
The Arahura rule row is not the same thing as permission to stand in the riverbed or cross the banks. Treat access as the first practical decision.
| Access question | Safer action |
|---|---|
| Is Arahura access permission currently available? | Check current Fish & Game and Mawhera access status before buying for Arahura |
| Does the licence grant access? | No. Fish & Game licence authority and land access are separate |
| Does a DOC track mean fishing permission? | No. DOC route context does not override Arahura bed-and-bank ownership |
| Is the trip downstream of Milltown/Landsburgh? | The row may be all year, but access still has to be current and lawful |
| Is the trip upstream of Milltown/Landsburgh? | Check both the seasonal row and the access position before choosing fishing days |
Do not publish or follow old personal contact details from older regulation booklets as a guaranteed access pathway. Current access status can change without the rule row changing.
DOC Route Context Is Separate
DOC's Arahura and Styx valley information is useful for route and hazard context. It mentions lower valleys used for trout fishing, private farmland near the road end, river crossings, slips, rainfall risks, poor coverage, and access from the Milltown road end.
| DOC context | What it does and does not decide |
|---|---|
| Tracks, road ends, huts, and routes | Helps with travel planning, but does not replace Fish & Game fishing rules |
| Private farmland and road-end notes | Reinforces that access permission is separate from a fishing licence |
| River crossings, slips, rainfall | Decides whether a legal plan is sensible on the day |
| Poor mobile coverage | Makes backup communication part of the access plan |
Use the DOC information as a route reality check, not as proof that Arahura fishing access is open.
Not A West Coast Designated Water
Arahura is easy to confuse with Karamea or Mokihinui because all three are West Coast rivers with named-water issues. The legal problem is different.
| West Coast water | Main L3 decision |
|---|---|
| Arahura River | Access permission plus Milltown/Landsburgh Bridge rule split |
| Karamea River | Kakapo River confluence and Designated Waters licence path |
| Mokihinui River | Rough and Tumble Creek and Designated Waters licence path |
| Grey River | Clarke River confluence and Arnold River separation |
| Haast River | Pleasant Flat Bridge split and lower-river winter-open check |
Do not buy a Designated Waters licence for Arahura unless a newer official West Coast source changes the designated-water list.
Buying The Right Licence
For Arahura, the buying decision can be "pause" rather than "buy now".
| Situation | Buying action |
|---|---|
| No current access permission found | Do not buy specifically for an Arahura session until access is resolved |
| Access confirmed and fishing upstream | Check 1 Oct-30 Apr row, then choose the right Fish & Game licence |
| Access confirmed and fishing downstream | Check all-year row, then choose the right Fish & Game licence |
| Overseas visitor | Check non-resident Fish & Game products after access and reach are confirmed |
| Trip adds Karamea, Mokihinui, Lake Brunner, or coast | Check those separate pages and authorities before combining licence decisions |
A Fish & Game licence is still required for the freshwater sports-fishing activity once access is lawfully available. It is not a substitute for access permission.
Before Fishing Arahura River
- Confirm the session is Arahura River and not another West Coast water.
- Check the latest Fish & Game and Mawhera access status before buying for Arahura.
- Place the fishing water upstream or downstream of Milltown/Landsburgh Bridge.
- Open the current West Coast regulations and match season, FSB methods, daily bag, Note 1, and salmon caveat.
- Confirm whether a resident or non-resident Fish & Game licence is appropriate only after access and reach are settled.
- Review DOC route hazards, private-land notes, river crossings, rain, slips, and communication limits.
- Carry the licence and current official links if access is confirmed, then clean gear before moving to another water.
Arahura River is ready only when access permission, Milltown/Landsburgh Bridge position, West Coast rule row, licence category, route safety, and weather all agree.
FAQ
Do I need a Fish & Game licence for Arahura River?
If Arahura access is lawfully available for the trip, the freshwater sports-fishing rule path is West Coast Fish & Game and the current Arahura row still controls the fishing rules.
Does a Fish & Game licence give Arahura River access?
No. Fish & Game's West Coast material says the Arahura bed and banks are not public land, so access permission is a separate decision before buying for that river.
Is Arahura River a West Coast Designated Water?
No current West Coast Designated Waters source checked for this page lists Arahura River. Karamea and Mokihinui are the West Coast designated-water examples to recheck.
What is the Arahura River trap?
Do not treat the rule row as permission to fish. The current access layer can stop the trip before licence purchase, even though the West Coast table still prints Arahura seasons and methods.
